After
leaving Kelowna I kept silent and moved to a remote area with no power and with
limited television and communication services. I was in the process of building
a cabin during the winter of 1998 when I first noticed that a marked Police
vehicle had taken an interest in my activities. When on supply trips I would
quite often encounter a police vehicle on the same stretch of highway and
noticed that he would brake immediately and would do a u turn and follow at a
distance. He never pulled me over and I was never pulled over
in any road block ahead, he merely followed. The one encounter that alerted me
to the fact that there was something really strange going on was one time when I
was fuelling up at a service station along this route as a police car went past
the entrance on the highway. I saw the drivers head look in my direction before
he hit the brakes and attempted to make a turn into the far entrance way. It was
winter and he was going way to fast for the road conditions to make the turn.
The officer ditched the car right at the entranceway and stuck his car in the
snowbank. I left out the other entrance way and was not
stopped or surveilled by any other police vehicle. It appeared to be just that
one police officer who was interested in me for some reason.
Along
this route I had to take a ferry boat across to my destination and was in a
habit of stopping at MacDonalds for a coffee when coming and going. On
one particular night no-one answered to take my order at the drive through
speaker window. I waited about five minutes before going to the service window
and knocking. The girl that was usually working the window was standing in the
back crying in the company of another girl. A male, possibly
the manager, dark hair and thick glasses came to the window. He took my order
but something just did not seem right. About one week later when I went through
again, the crying girl had been replaced at the order window by the girl seen
with her on my previous visit. The new girl nonchalantly brushed off my concern
about the crying girl. The crying girl became a missing person and has never
been found.
